What is a board-certified allergist?
A board-certified allergist first completes at least three years of specialty training in either internal medicine or pediatrics, and then completes an additional training program of two or more years studying the diagnosis and treatment of allergic and related diseases. Certification by the American Board of Allergy and Immunology requires approved training and also successful completion of a challenging written examination. Every board-certified allergist thus has credentials in at least two specialties and is qualified to care for both children and adults.

As a result, Dr. Rao has advanced training and expertise in the techniques of finding out what is causing an allergic reaction and how best to solve the problem.

What Causes Allergies?
Allergy problems arise when your immune system overreacts to an allergen—something that is usually harmless, such as plant pollen, dust mites, mold, insect stings, and certain foods. If you have an allergy, your immune system acts as if the allergens were dangerous, releasing a chemical called histamine that causes allergy symptoms. If the allergen is something you breathe in from the air, your reaction will most likely affect your eyes, nose, and lungs. If it's something you eat, it may affect your mouth, stomach and intestines. Food allergies also can cause skin rashes or even asthma symptoms
